Using Video to Document Your Possessions
The hope is you never have to file a Homeowner’s or Renter’s insurance claim for lost or destroyed personal possessions. But you can save yourself a lot of hassle if you are prepared for the damage or loss occurs.
It can sometimes be difficult and frustrating to prove to your insurance company, after it has been stolen, that you did own a 55” plasma TV or a laptop computer. One very smart and easy way to document your belongings ahead of time is through video.
Documenting possession today via video is very easy today because most people have a video camera on their phones. You can easily use your phone to capture and store images of everything you own. Open all your closets, cabinets and drawers, and describe what you see in them as you record it all on your phone. Be sure to include what’s in your bookcase, art on shelves or on the walls along with your major appliances. Be sure to record brand names and serial numbers so your insurance company can replace what you had as closely as possible.
But you only need to focus on things that are valuable. You can skip food in the freezer and cleaning supplies in a closet. An insurance adjuster is more likely to create a bulk estimate for those things anyway. Those aren’t really the things you’re insuring.
Then, when you are satisfied you have documented everything, transfer your video(s) from your phone to a thumb drive and/or upload it to cloud-based storage. Place your thumb drive in a safe deposit box at your local financial institution, or leave it with a friend, so you can access it if/when you need to.
Taking these easy steps now can save you a lot of headaches later, and make your claims process and restoration go a lot faster. If you have additional questions about the right kind of insurance for your home-based business, call us! We’ll be happy to help you understand your options.
