Bicycle Insurance: What You’re Covered For — and What You’re Not

As the weather warms up and bikes hit the streets, it’s worth asking: If something goes wrong on your bicycle, does your insurance have your back? The answer depends on the situation — and the type of coverage you have.

Let’s start with when you cause an accident while biking — for example, if you hit a pedestrian or damage someone’s property. In this case, your auto insurance won’t help because it only applies when you’re operating a motor vehicle. However, your homeowners or renters insurance may cover you through its personal liability protection, and umbrella insurance (if you have it) can add an extra layer of coverage for larger claims.

Now, what if you’re the one hit by a car while biking? That’s where your Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage from your auto policy can come in — even though you weren’t in a car. If the driver has no insurance, not enough coverage, or flees the scene, UM/UIM can cover your medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and potentially even damage to your bike.
